Landscaping is an interdisciplinary research and performance series in which a group of artists explore the relationship between humans and the constantly changing environment by movement and traces people leave behind. The Landscaping series consists of an event at Tolhuistuin on August 5th 2021, the premiere in Amsterdamse Bos from 31 August to 4 September 2021 and the publication Moving beyond the landscape by landscape architecture scholar Daphne Bakker.
The landscape is there. It breathes sounds waves roars. It constantly changes its form. To what extend do we embody the landscape and is the landscape defined by us? How do body and landscape set each other in motion? Landscaping is a dance production by WhyNot, created with landscape architect Anna Fink, researcher of (landscape) architecture Daphne Bakker, choreographers Dario Tortorelli, Elisa Zuppini & Nica, composer and producer Job Oberman (alias Oceanic) and scenographer Theun Mosk.
For Landscaping, WhyNot brings together a collective of artists from various corners of the cultural field, whose work is centered around the body. After weeks of research they stage a series of interlinked performance interventions against the green backdrop of the Amsterdamse Bos. With physical connections, disruptions, rhythms, rituals, and changing sightlines they explore the continuous construction of the land. From these different perspectives, a new outcome emerges; you'll never see the Amsterdamse Bos in the same way again.
The audience takes place in a spatial installation by scenographer Theun Mosk that will define our gaze and perspective. For their piece, choreography duo Elisa Zuppini & Nica examined how human emotions relate to the natural environment, while choreographer Dario Tortorelli chose to zoom in on the rhythms that can be found in nature. Composer and producer Job Oberman (Oceanic) records and distorts natural noise to create new sound experiences. He seeks the interaction and connection between birdsong and human language, in which we, as visitors in a landscape, gain a better understanding of nature.
Since 2017, contemporary dance and performance platform WhyNot has initiated a series in which the body and dance are connected to a different discipline in order to foster exchange and cross-disciplinary practices. In this series WhyNot investigates the human body and its movement in relation to space, previously focusing on the amoeba, the first form of life and building block of the body. From the micro to the macro, Landscaping zooms out to examine the body in relation to our natural environment by means of movement and the traces people leave behind.

A performance-lecture about dance and architecture

The Japanese word Ma can be roughly translated as "gap", "interval", "pause" or "the space between two structural parts”.
How can the body affect the space it is in? How can a space influence the body? How can the two coexist in symbiosis?
To investigate these key questions, dance and performance platform WhyNot brings together two acclaimed artists from two different disciplines: choreographer Amos Ben-Tal (OFFprojects) and inter-disciplinary artist Gosse de Kort.
Together with dancer and long-time OFFprojects collaborator Genevieve Osborne, the two makers share with the public the intricate choreographic material and a mesmerizing kinetic installation that emerged from their interactions over the past few months. Interspersed playfully throughout this unique event are personal insights from the artists about their practices and methods but also the discrete languages and intuitions that fed their collaboration.
Parallel to the research of Amos & Gosse, critical writer and researcher at Het Nieuwe Instituut Katia Truijen has made an elaborate publication about the links between art, dance and architecture: Moving through the middle
Ma is not something that is created by compositional elements; it takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements.

OURSPACE
a social performance bot
OurSpace is a participatory performance that zooms in on the virtual and the physical space between people, their online and offline identity and social encounters.
Ourspace is a quirky social experiment and performance that choreographs the bodies of participants using a chatbot in WhatsApp. The performance tests the boundaries of space in our hyperconnected world. It’s a productive way to reflect on the seemingly normalized things we do in virtual social networks like following, zooming and liking -- and to highlight the embodied experience of these media practices.
The audience is guided by an artificial chatbot on WhatsApp. This artificial companion is sharing stories and responding with assignments that translates online social habits into physical movements. These storylines can vary from simple actions “If you think somebody looks interesting, tap this person on the shoulder” to more intimate actions “Observe your new friend closely: smell them, feel them”.

In September 2018 we launched Ourspace 3.0, commissioned by RAUM, Utrecht. This new version of Ourspace is focussing on new social spaces (neighbourhoods, festivals). It offers an offline social network, human data visualizations and guarantees ‘new friends for life!’. OurSpace was inspired by the interactive app iPerform, developed for Van Gogh Museum in 2015. Currently, OurSpace has been bought by schools, and it being played by kids all around the country.

WhyNot x Blank Blank Film
Leave Body Behind is an experimental film project of Dutch dance and performance platform WhyNot and Finnish-Colombian filmstudio Blank Blank Film, with an electronic sound score by Stiletti-Ana. The film will premiere during Cinedans Festival 2017 at EYE Filmmuseum. Four choreographers (Liat Waysbort, Marjolein Vogels, Amos Ben-Tal and Marie Goeminne) each made a scene based on different ways of ‘releasing’ the physical body: death, sexual climax and transcendent rituals. The scenes are melded into one story – a mystical quest for spiritual freedom, caught in movement.
After the screening, at 22:00 in the Foyer at EYE 1, the makers will present an audiovisual installation, and live performances by dancer Amos Ben-Tal and musician Stiletti-Ana, in which the inner world of the dancer is trying to find its way out.
Leave Body Behind is the outcome of a two-week residency in the Tolhuistuin Amsterdam.
iPerform
WhyNot x Van Gogh Museum: iPerform
About iPERFORM iPerform is an interactive smart phone application working with bluetooth transmittors called iBeacons that - instead of an informative audio tour - took the audience on a physical expedition through the museum, past certain works by Van Gogh. With specific assignments you get a physical experience of the art. On Friday, March 6th, the pilot of the app was launched at the Van Gogh museum.
