Futuristic fantasy worlds, defying gravity, bodies merging together, humans becoming machines. On Saturday 28 October WhyNot presents their sixth festival edition, this time at De School. One full day, we wander through De School to encounter dance performances, installations, talks, films, great food and (club)music.

In the near future, not you, but an algorithm will determine what emoji best suits your current state of mind. But do we know our bodies well enough to let technology control them? The artists we have invited for this sixth edition investigate what happens when the body disappears or is being replaced.

Dinner in the cafe is also possible without a combi-ticket, but there are a limited amount of meals available. So if you want to eat, just go to the cafe and reserve a seat!

WhyNot x Paradiso: The Body & Beats (ADE)

The Body & Beats is the second edition of a new series in which WhyNot connects the body and dance to each time a different art scene, to find common grounds and to inspire each other. During ADE, WhyNot zooms in on the body in relation to electronic music. The Body & Beats reseraches how the body reacts to different types of beats, and how a musician/dj can alter this physical experience. What do we know about the history of 'club dancing' and how does this relate to the developments now? What is the relationship between beats and trance, and its effect on the body? Does club music bring people together or does it promote individual pleasure? With presentations and showcases by different artists, we dive deeper into these two worlds: dance (the music) vs dance (the movement).

The evening will be hosted by Gagi Petrovic, composer, teacher and performer of music. Petrovic has composed music for several dance pieces, and was even briefly dancing himself. He is fascinated with the body in relation to music and lets choreographic elements find their way into his mostly electronic sound.

WhyNot x Public: Culture Club

We Are Public presents Culture Club. An evening filled with art, theatre and music. And WhyNot is spicing up the Culture Club program with some dance!

As a Festival WhyNot sneak preview, we invited talented young makers Youri Peters and Marie Khatib-Shahidi. In there first piece Morning, Mourning they drag a lifeless body through the space, each time evoking a different thought or emotion within the spectator. In this piece, they use the physical states that are connected to emotion and let the audience experience grief, absence, loneliness and loss.

This summer, WhyNot is back again in the beautiful Garden of De Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam. This time for a co-production in collaboration with De Tolhuistuin, led by prize-winning choreographer Giulio D'Anna. On Sunday, 20 August, WhyNot presents the premiere of Study for MAGENTA, the final result of a series of summer workshops and also a pre-study for D'Anna's upcoming work MAGENTA (2019). This production in the form of group choreography derives from WhyNot's long-term fascination with “letting go" of the body or “leaving the body behind”.

Together with a group of performers, both amateurs and professionals, D'Anna creates a choreography in the garden, reseraching whether we can become one in a society in which individualism is rampant. What would that unity look like? And what happens to our individual identity if we want to use the power of the masses?

In addition to Study for MAGENTA, WhyNot presents a concert of De Polyband, founded by guitarist Jasper Stadhouders, introduced by a dance improvisation. The Polyband is a varied group of musicians and other performers dedicated to hypnotic sessions with ever-changing rhythms, and ever changing sounds. Ritualistic, transcendent, symmetrical, euphoric. They were previously seen on festivals such as Le Guess Who? and Motel Mozaïque.

Furthermore, WhyNot shows their latest dance film Leave Body Behind, which premiered at Cinedans Festival in EYE in March 2017, and presents an interactive and experimental Whatsapp project together with Lava Lab and Hackers & Designers that gets the audience moving. From 6 p.m. the garden is open and everyone can enjoy a drink in the sun and some very tasty Turkish pizzas.

Study for MAGENTA is an initiative of WhyNot in co-production with De Tolhuistuin and is being developed in the run-up to the sixth WhyNot festival edition, which takes place in De School from 27th to 29th of October 2017.

On Saturday 17 June we invited you to the pilot of our new series The Body &. With each edition, we combine the dance & performance world with another creative scene to give you an insight in this crossdisciplinairy practise and open up new ways of thinking. Our aim is to let dance and movement inspire other disciplines, and visa versa.

This first pilot edition, named The Body & < >, was about movement, live performance and computer language. Artists that are working on the border of choreography and coding talked about and presented their work, with drinks afterwards!

During the day, both dancers/performers and coders could participate in a workshop by Joana Chicau. Check out the program below.

WORKSHOP

Coding choreographies - Joana Chicau 10:00 - 18:00
Fee: 30 euro (incl. lunch and dinner)

This workshop offers a cross-disciplinary exploration of choreography & (web)code. We create a temporary stage for experimenting with web design tools which follow choreographic methods and thematic concerns. The outcome is a piece of ‘choreographic code' — all participants are invited to contribute to the choreographic code by translating the ideas discussed in the session into html/css/javascript functions or as prototypes developed in other formats.

We will select and create interdisciplinary pairs or groups of different entry levels and expertise. At the end of the day, there is room to present the outcome to your fellow workshops participants.

• ZYX app - Jodi.org + introduction:
  Art collective and conceptual web-pranksters JODI consists of the Dutch-Belgium internet artists Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans. The ZYX app was launched at the closing party of NiMK. The project creates a participatory performance by the visitors of the event. Joan Heemskerk will give a short presentation about this project before we will start this interactive performance with our own smartphones.

• A Web Page in Three Acts - Joana Chicau + introduction:
  Next to her workshop, Joana Chicau herself will perform the piece A Web Page in Three Acts, combining principles of choreography within the formal structures of coding.

• I-Perform 2.0 - WhyNot i.c.w. Lava Lab & Hackers & Designers:
  Together with the audience, we will test our new participatory performance app that zooms in on the virtual and the physical space between people, their online and offline identity and social encounters. Are you willing to let us come as close to you as Facebook?

• OBOL LE - Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti + after talk:
  Inspired by the musical meaning of old woven carpets from Bolivia, this pop-electronic performance group translates sound material via an algorythm into projected carpets as 'graphic scores'. "Using synthesizers and live tape manipulation amongst other instruments and vocals, combined with costume-made algorithmic video projections that respond to the music, this is like improvised jazz gone into jet-setting, shape-shifting hyperdrive" - (Jeremy Young / Soundfly)

WHYNOT SUMMER WORKSHOPS

Can we become one in a society where individualism is rampant? And what would that unity look like? As a pre-study for his upcoming piece MAGENTA (2019), award-winning choreographer Giulio D'Anna invites (amateur)dancers to create a group choreography this summer during five workshops in a beautiful garden that is De Tolhuistuin.

About the workshop:
With a group of twenty amateur and professional dancers you will work on structured dance improvisation techniques and assignments, based on collaboration. Diriving from individual movement, the choreographer creates a group choreography in the garden; collective body sculptures and synchronized rythms that lay bare human relationships.

About Giulio D’Anna:
Italian choreographer Giulio D'Anna had his international breakthrough in 2012 with the intimate performance Parkin’son that he made and danced together with his father. As a pre-study for his upcoming piece MAGENTA (2019) he now invites (amateur)dancers to participate in a series of workshops that are focused on connection, and that will result in a performance. With this, he researches what happens when people move together in harmony, in one rythm, as one body.

LEAVE BODY BEHIND FILM PREMIERE

Leave Body Behind is an experimental film project of Dutch dance and performance platform WhyNot and Finnish-Colombian filmstudio Blank Blank Film, with an electronic sound score by Stiletti-Ana. The film will premiere during Cinedans Festival 2017 at EYE Filmmuseum. Four choreographers (Liat Waysbort, Marjolein Vogels, Amos Ben-Tal and Marie Goeminne) each made a scene based on different ways of ‘releasing’ the physical body: death, sexual climax and transcendent rituals. The scenes are melded into one story – a mystical quest for spiritual freedom, caught in movement.

After the screening, at 22:00 in the Foyer at EYE 1, the makers will present an audiovisual installation, and live performances by dancer Amos Ben-Tal and musician Stiletti-Ana, in which the inner world of the dancer is trying to find its way out.

Leave Body Behind is the outcome of a two-week residency in the Tolhuistuin Amsterdam.
