PolyBand
The ​PolyBand is built around an ever expanding pool of musicians and performers. Together they create an amalgamation of sound and movements, where each member is equal. Its flexible instrumentation is built around a core of multiple electric guitars and drums, often augmented by accordion, bagpipes and keyboards, and often featuring guest musicians. Dance plays an important role in the performances. PolyBand is led by guitarist Jasper Stadhouders (also in Spinifex and Cactus Truck). Following memorable shows at Le Guess Who?, Transition and Lowlands, the band will now perform at Festival WhyNot!

The ancient Greeks already believed that the cosmos produced music. In 1967 they were proven right, when the first pulsar was discovered: a spinning dead star that emits a regular pulse. The discovery inspired Gérard Grisey to create a masterpiece for a percussion ensemble, called Le Noir de l’Étoile. Choreographer Marc Vanrunxt kneads it into a fascinating space trip for music and dance; composer/sonologist Hugo Morales Murguía counters it with a new work. 

The sound of a pulsar provides the pulse of Grisey’s music, which propels the four dancers from Kunst/Werk and the musicians from Slagwerk Den Haag. Mexican Hugo Morales Murguía, who is now based in the Netherlands, made a composition for four percussionists with solar panels and a rotating light beacon as an 'answer' to Grisey. According to Marc Vanrunxt, the Drawings program is built around contrasts: *"The audible versus the inaudible; the visible versus the invisible; the perceptible versus the barely perceptible. It is a dive into the cosmos, the space surrounding us versus the unreachable.

Jennifer Tee: DRIFT

WhyNot Festival and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam proudly present DRIFT, a new multilingual performance by Jennifer Tee. DRIFT takes inspiration from eco-poetics, a genre in which poets respond to the growing climate crisis through their use of language, mimicking ecological processes such as recycling and looping. In collaboration with poet Jane Lewty, Tee compiled a collection of poetry and novels—titled the "Eco-Poetics Stack of Books"—that focus on the vulnerable relationship between nature and culture, language and perception, beauty and destruction. Lewty assembled these publications into a new collage of poem-texts, read aloud by performers of diverse languages and nationalities, choreographed with the assistance of WhyNot Festival director Marjolein Vogels. Set against a backdrop designed by Tee, DRIFT explores how language plays into questions of land rights, nationality, belonging, and ecology.

Language is a system through which we discover and identify ourselves, both as individuals and collectively as a society, and has long taken a central role in Tee’s practice. Whether writing systems such as alphabets or pictographic characters, or as bodily movement or “body language,” communication in its many forms is of prime interest to Tee, and reflected in her visual art and choreographic practices, respectively. Further, while we experience political discourse through language, language also bears a politics itself: in a time of increasing globalization, the loss of land and language to colonization often go hand and hand, and mark a troubling march toward cultural homogenization. Tee proposes that a new poetic language is needed to discuss the intersectional relationship between the climate crisis and its increased impact on marginalized communities.

About Jennifer Tee:
Jennifer Tee works across sculpture, installation, performance, and collages. Her work is the exploration of a continuous dialogue between material experimentation and philosophical contemplation. Often working with charged cultural artifacts and symbols, she opens dialogues between instilled esoteric ideas and the materiality of objects she engages, evoking the cultural landscapes of Western art history and Eastern philosophy. 

Tee pairs her diverse points of inspiration to form new dialogues and encounters, bringing together disparate formal and conceptual references such as Hilma af Klint, Wassily Kandinsky, and Taoist magic. Embracing their duality, the works hover between their material and their laden meaning. Tee has exhibited in exhibitions and biennials throughout the world, most recently participating in the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo (2018) and the 16th Istanbul Biennial (2019).

A black flag is kept in motion for hours on end. Its movement and the flapping of the fabric become both choreography and sound. Presented as a single continuous action, Relay draws its inspiration from the many recent protests taking place around the globe, among them, the mass marches in Poland, in defence of women’s rights, called “Czarny Protest” (Black Protest). The black flag cannot be linked to one particular battle and hence defies easy interpretation. Implicit references to liberation movements are counteracted by the resurgence of flags that, in our current dictatorship of fear, mainly connote exclusionary identities. 

The Polish Canadian choreographer Ula Sickle and a diverse group of performers relay one another in a fascinating test of endurance. Their movements pass back and forth between inertia and hope, resistance and powerlessness. They each individually take on the responsibility to keep the flag moving, but it is the collective effort required that makes Relay such a powerful symbol. How is resistance still possible in a system that has managed to incorporate every form of opposition?

Dr. Esmee Geerken obtained a PhD in marine geochemistry at the Royal Dutch institute for Sea Research and graduated from Rietveld academy. In 
her talk she will compare the shells of unicellular marine creatures called 'foraminifera' with human architecture, thereby placing the relationship between the building and the body in a geological context.

The performance Spell action #1 examines how objects set within a spatial environment interact with each other and can have a guiding effect on other bodies. An object in the space suggests how to move around it, while the space itself also determines the movement possibilities of such an object. During the performance, the structures, together with two dancers, perform a calculated choreography, simultaneously exploring the possibilities of the W139 space. Physical strength, discipline and coordinated actions are required to set those objects in motion, as well as to create a harmonious movement.

Rudolf von Laban - a dance theoretic, one of the pioneers of contemporary dance in Europe, had a strong impact on Butkutė‘s creative work and theoretical ideas. Contemplating on Laban’s movement analyses, the artist directed a choreography of objects and people in motion. The way in which an object is constructed and changed by performers forms the basis of the transformative movements from one sculptural form into the next. The constant changes in the choreography of the performance means that the installation transforms into a kinetic sculpture that invariably communicates with its surroundings. 

Rūta Butkutė is a Kaunas-born artist currently living and working in Amsterdam. She studied at Vilnius Academy of Arts, Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Butkutė actively organises solo exhibitions (Kaaistudios and Rosas P.A.R.T.S in Brussels, Fons Welters gallery in Amsterdam, Teruhiro Yanagihara gallery in Japan, etc.) as well as participates in group shows all over the world. The artist has also participated in various residencies and was awarded with several individual scholarships.

In this lecture performance, Clara Amaral explores the fall of a smartphone and the shifts in perspective that come with it. Just like a cascade that keeps on falling again and again - downward and onward - Amaral stares into the same surface in order to produce porosity, depth and poetics. Clara Amaral graduated from SNDO (Amsterdam) in 2013 and is currently doing her MA at the Dutch Art Institute. She is active as a choreographer and writer and has collaborated as a performer with Ivana Muller, Oneka von Schrader and Becket Mingwen.

Dunja Jocic is one of the most exciting new choreographers in the Netherlands. In Resident, a young man moved into an apartment in a modern residential tower, in his quest for perfect living conditions. His apartment is equipped with the latest technologies, is in direct contact with the technology in his body and ensures that he can spend his days as efficiently as possible. But his existence in the grip of technology companies has alienated him from living outside his apartment. As the days alternate, he feels that the apartment has a strange effect on him. 

Dunja Jocic (Belgrade, 1978) danced among others with Club Guy and Roni, Ballet du Nord (FR) and Emio Greco / PC. In 2013, she was nominated for the Swan "most impressive dance performance" for her role in Midnight Rising by Guy & Roni. She was nominated for a Golden Calf (2015), won the BNG Bank Dance Prize (2016) and the Prize of the Dutch Dance Days Maastricht (2018).

A dancers’ body is like an archive of choreography. Choreographer Fabienne Vegt created a performance for three excellent dancers, from the renowned Nederlands Dans Theater 1, in which they recall movements and forms that were once written on their bodies. In Scripted Space these dreamlike memories demand a hyper-aware state of mind.

In fact, everyone's body contains a wordless story - physical memories of certain patterns, encounters, measurements of spaces, moves, habits, actions, dances. As we enter a new space we carry these memories with us under our skin.

The performance will be guided by renowned improv musicians Frank Rosaly (drums), Torbjörn Zetterberg (double bass) and Cene Resnik (saxophone) and will flow into the WhyNot party. Accompanied by the beats of Salvador Breed this ending of WhyNot’s 2020 edition is an invitation for everyone to let go of all kinds of written rules (scripts).

At WhyNot he will spin records for us that he finds along the way during his long wonderings through musical worlds.

GAIA Rising is an immersive installation investigating notions of the Earth as an interconnected web of life - the planetary body - through the senses. Inside the cave-like space a guided meditation invites us to explore our relationship with other beings, matter and the Earth through our own bodies. The cave has been, since the dawn of humanity, a place of shelter and connection with the Earth, a place of rebirth and regeneration. The somatic dimension of these concepts are explored through tactile, visual, olfactory and aural motives. The soundscape is developed in collaboration with composer Eric Maltz. The work features the chant of Shaman Ibeyis Chamba Hurtado. Different iterations of the work have been shown at Ampersands W139 in Amsterdam (NL), Sonic Somatic Festival in Florence (IT) and the Bienal Internacional de Arte Amazónico in Pucallpa (PE). 

Annika Kappner creates sensory scenographies in the extended field of painting, combining landscape, installation, performance, scent and sound to create glitches in perception. Her work is interested in the evolution of consciousness, the shifting perception of (self) image in relation to mental patterns and the underlying forces that shape their systemic counterparts in nature, visual culture and science. She seeks to add experiential perspectives to the contemporary relationship between human, nature and technology, addressing concepts of non-duality and otherness; to enable an emancipation of ways of sensing. She is a co-founder of the multi-disciplinary artist collective Elephants & Volcanoes.

Her work has been presented, among others, at Het Nieuwe Instituut (NL), Kunstfort Vijfhuizen (NL), Marres House for Contemporary Art Maastricht (NL), Bienal Internacional de Arte Amazónico (PE), Concordia University, Montreal (CA), National Museum of Natural History, Menton (FR), Rush Arts Gallery, New York (US), Sonic Somatic (IT) and Wallace Museum, London (UK).

Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his seventy-year career and is considered one of the most important choreographers of all time! 

The dance film Assemblage (1968, 58′) presents a dance that unfolds across fractured space and inside shattered time. It is a recently rediscovered lost film featuring Merce Cunningham and his early dance company. A collaboration with director and former dancer Richard Moore, Assemblage features Cunningham dancing with his company in a public happening in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square in November 1968. Cunningham’s riveting performance, conceived from the beginning as a dance staged for the camera, is amplified by Moore’s astonishing special effects and a soundtrack by John Cage, David Tudor and Gordon Mumma. Assemblage serves as a testament to Cunningham’s groundbreaking investigations of dance and movement within the virtual spaces of film.

Audience placement, spatial experience and frameworks are starting points in the work of scenographer and designer Theun Mosk. His work is mainly seen in the theatre with strong roots in Boukje Schweigman's experience theater. Mosk also often works on location and makes site-specific installations. His work has become increasingly autonomous in recent years.

Especially for WhyNot, Theun Mosk will explore the space by working with the floor and intervening with materials, so that the public will move through the space automatically. The boundary between 'the work' and the space as it is, is being investigated. Most of the time, Mosk's work has a clear route, a start and an end like a performance, now this time span will not be there, but plenty of movement and spatial experiences.

Masterclass Olivier de Sagazan

During the festival, on the 7th and 9th of August, the renowned performance artist Olivier de Sagazan will give a masterclass for art students from different art academies! During this masterclass participants will be introduced to his artistic practices and inspirations. While building layers of clay and paint onto their upper bodies and faces, the participants will transform themselves into fascinating creatures.

On the 9th, participants will present their work at the festival itself, in front of the audience. On the 8th, De Sagazan will perform his work Hybridation together with Marie Cardinal. Entrance to this performance, as well as the rest of the three day festival, will be free for participants of the masterclass.

About the masterclass:

Covering one’s body and face can be seen as an initiation ritual from prehistoric times. This seemingly naive and unaffected ritual is in fact a very liberating and creative triggering experience. The body, covered in clay, will be transfigured into a kind of sculpture and will move in unexpected and different ways. Like a phantom moving towards the afterlife. A once in a life time experience!

About Olivier de Sagazan:

Performer and sculptor Olivier de Sagazan was born in Brazzaville, Congo in 1959. He now lives and works in Saint Nazaire, France. For more than 20 years, Olivier de Sagazan has developed a hybrid practice that integrates painting, photography, sculpture and performance. With his work De Sagazan is able to cross boundaries between the physical, intellectual, spiritual and animalistic senses. Therefore his work is disquieting and deeply moving. Equally inspired by Francis Bacon and Samuel Beckett, he uses themes like deformity and transformation. De Sagazan has performed and exhibited worldwide, and had a part in the art film Samsara by Ron Fricke.

In CLOSE/D, choreographer Susanne Marx and operamaker Kirsten Schötteldreier are further developing the idea of a moving choir. Extracts from Masse und Macht by Elias Canetti are combined with the personal considerations of the singers; both texts speak about their personal fear of the other and the urge to withdraw into private spaces. Composer Natalia Dominguez Rangel has created a new musical piece based on the text. Speech merges into singing and movement morphs into sound.

Susanne Marx’s work is concerned as much with the sociological phenomena as the movement of a mass versus the individual. Different behaviours in a diverse cultural society are another focus of her work. She is fascinated by how these differences manifest and how they are often more close to each other then expected. Kirsten Schötteldreier supports and develops the unique, individual voices to create a heterogenous choir, where the individual word still can be heard.

In Dawn the naked human body takes center stage and opens up in front of us like a landscape, dressed in the outlines of the muscles, the wrinkles of the skin and its flushed texture. We are able to witness the body’s anatomical-mechanical nature or “animal-like quality”, which is such a taboo of our times.

The Hungarian choreographer Adrienn Hód presents a continuity of interactions and unstoppable series of changes that create a daring piece of performance which demands an exceptionally high level of consciousness, strength and sensitivity from the dancers. Dawn is an autonomous and radical research of the body, free from prejudices.

Janneke Raaphorst: Natural Business Card - Dealing with nature

Your guide will take you on a walk through the garden. Consider it a business trip where one will be introduced to dealing with nature by identifying natural business cards. We skip the detour of making paper and printing, we use the leaf directly to look up what kind of business the tree is into. 

The dictionary says dealing involves some kind of transaction. It seems dealing with nature today has become more of a one way action, taking without offering anything in return. Either we have to correct the dictionary or we have to reconsider the notion of transaction. What have we got nature to offer?

Jasper Griepink: Full-Body Handfasting

Full-Body Handfasting is the new deal. It is the wedding for a year or a day. It is you & your beloved taking vows (seriously or not) and getting tied together in a summery and flower-clad ceremonial pavilion. Dive into a tight & embalming uniquely tailored full-body wedding ritual in which surrender is rewarded and hesitation is not. Bondage like this is powerful, kind and loving. In the transformational realm that emerges between comfort and confrontation you will be guided on a short and insightful trip into being together and as one, (or as two, three, four – whatever holds your fancy). Full-body Handfasting also caters to individuals who want to get together with themselves; marrying your self might be the best thing you ever did.

Historically “Handfasting” has been a term for "betrothal" or "wedding" since the 16th century and has come to be used as a replacement for "marriage" in the vocabulary of Neopaganism since the 1990’s – especially in Wicca where the ritual symbolizes vows for a lifetime, for all of eternity or for as long as love shall last. Bondage is the consensually tying, binding, or restraining of some-one for erotic, aesthetic, and/or somatosensory stimulation – it is an often misunderstood art of transformation and discovery. 

Visitors of the festival are invited to surrender to getting tied together and married. Please visit the ceremonial pavilion for an appointment or an instant treatment. Come in pairs, groups of lovers, alone, bring whatever of your stuff you want to get closer to and take that togetherness to the next level.

Garden dinner with food by De Empanada Keuken and love songs by and with Oneka von Schrader

Empanada Keuken: 

You better show up with an empty stomach, because we’ll have many delicious snacks for you at the festival: Ali, our Turkish pizza baker, will bake some delicious pizzas during the evening and De Empanada Keuken will serve mouthwatering empanadas and hand rolls. On Saturday and Sunday you can even enjoy a complete meal: a bowl of gazpacho, followed by three types of empanadas with a salad and for desert a pannacotta with a blueberry sauce!

De Empanada Keuken was founded in 2014 by Aurora Gabriela Rosales who is currently studying at the Rietveld Academy. She gives the empanada, a popular Latin American dish, a modern twist by mixing traditional recipes with new ingredients and flavours!

​​Liat Waysbort & Salvador Breed: Trigger (preview)

WhyNot presents the first preview of Trigger, an exciting new project by choreographer Liat Waysbort and sound artist Salvador Breed. Trigger’s main theme is the exploration of touch and being touched as a counterpoint to its own meaning. Through the performance the link between sound, movement and touch is examined and an environment is built where the spectators loose notion of authorship. The dancers create the music and the music creates the choreography.

Ingrid Berger Myhre: Current (excerpt)

“When we start to do, we start to eliminate. We narrow down the possibilities, we limit the initial potential. And yet, it is only when doing something - anything - that new potentials are born. We cancel out options, but create the ground for new ones.”

Ingrid Berger Myhre presents an excerpt of her performance Current. Text and language are central elements in her works, and often used in order to describe a scenario that could very well happen, but does not, because it is described instead. Speaking prevents the situation from actually occuring, but also allows it to exist by suggesting it to our imagination. What is refused appears at the same time - suspended in language.

Ingrid graduated this summer from ex.e.r.ce MA choreography research and performance at Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier.

Cie. OFEN: One Final Evolutionary Note

One Final Evolutionary Note is a take on Charles Darwins 1859 book On the Origin of Species, and how life forms exist in duration, specifically through natural selection and the struggle for existence. The performance seeks to devise existential and philosophical questions about the nature of our bodies as biological and political entities in this day and age, searching for ways in which we can represent our bodies in various forms and contexts, from a tiny atom to a universal explosion. 

In duet formation, our bodies together represent one person and all people, we both represent I, a symbiotic I, a parasitic I. We are blood cells, clotting and unclotting. Who are we when we are apart? We are not us, and not I. If we were in a life and death situation, how would we override each other non-violently? How would we represent ourselves as bodies in our political system?

Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti & Frank Rosaly: Amaranthine

Performer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago drummer Frank Rosaly will be presenting their new duo project featuring Ibelisse’s masterful spinning technique, derived from her studies of sufi dervish practice. Rosaly creates cyclical percussion patterns that weave within Ibelisse's perpetual spinning. The performers infiltrate a space with continual rhythm and motion, allowing repetition to be their point of convergence.

From Rumi the sufi mysticus: A secret turning in us makes the universe turn. Head unaware of feet, and feet head. Neither cares. They keep turning.

Olivier de Sagazan: Hybridation (NL premiere)

After 20 years, WhyNot brings the cutting edge, internationally renowned French performer and sculptor Olivier de Sagazan back to the Netherlands! Equally inspired by Francis Bacon and Samuel Beckett, De Sagazan uses clay and paint to perform acts of live sculpture in which his own face is the canvas. 

Together with Isabelle Vialle he presents his disturbing love duet Hybridation. A man and a woman enter a dialogue in which the ground acts as a substitute for language – an exchange of earth and fingerprints…

Olivier de Sagazan was born in Brazzaville/Congo in 1959, he lives and works in Saint Nazaire, France. For more than 20 years Olivier de Sagazan has developed a hybrid practice that integrates painting, photography, sculpture, and performance. Disquieting and deeply moving, his body of work crosses the boundaries between the physical, intellectual, spiritual and animalistic senses. He has exhibited widely in France, Europe, US, India, Korea, China, in art galleries, museums, and festivals. With an almost cult following online, and rave reviews about his expressive and inimitable style, de Sagazan’s body art work is also featured in the non-verbal film Samsara directed by Ron Fricke and a future feature movie just filmed in Los Angeles with Mario Sorrenti and Harald Kloser.

De Sagazan: “I dreamed of being a dancer, using my own body as an essential element to express my anguish and my fascination with being alive. My performances are another way of channeling this urge. My main inspiration is in looking at nature with the eyes of the biologist I was and the philosopher I am trying to be.”

Masterclass Olivier de Sagazan

During the festival, on the 7th and 9th of August, the renowned performance artist Olivier de Sagazan will give a masterclass for art students from different art academies! During this masterclass participants will be introduced to his artistic practices and inspirations. While building layers of clay and paint onto their upper bodies and faces, the participants will transform themselves into fascinating creatures.

On the 9th, participants will present their work at the festival itself, in front of the audience. On the 8th, De Sagazan will perform his work Hybridation together with Marie Cardinal. Entrance to this performance, as well as the rest of the three day festival, will be free for participants of the masterclass.

About the masterclass:

Covering one’s body and face can be seen as an initiation ritual from prehistoric times. This seemingly naive and unaffected ritual is in fact a very liberating and creative triggering experience. The body, covered in clay, will be transfigured into a kind of sculpture and will move in unexpected and different ways. Like a phantom moving towards the afterlife. A once in a life time experience!

About Olivier de Sagazan:

Jasper Griepink: Full-Body Handfasting

Full-Body Handfasting is the new deal. It is the wedding for a year or a day. It is you & your beloved taking vows (seriously or not) and getting tied together in a summery and flower-clad ceremonial pavilion. Dive into a tight & embalming uniquely tailored full-body wedding ritual in which surrender is rewarded and hesitation is not. Bondage like this is powerful, kind and loving. In the transformational realm that emerges between comfort and confrontation you will be guided on a short and insightful trip into being together and as one, (or as two, three, four – whatever holds your fancy). Full-body Handfasting also caters to individuals who want to get together with themselves; marrying your self might be the best thing you ever did.

Historically “Handfasting” has been a term for "betrothal" or "wedding" since the 16th century and has come to be used as a replacement for "marriage" in the vocabulary of Neopaganism since the 1990’s – especially in Wicca where the ritual symbolizes vows for a lifetime, for all of eternity or for as long as love shall last. Bondage is the consensually tying, binding, or restraining of some-one for erotic, aesthetic, and/or somatosensory stimulation – it is an often misunderstood art of transformation and discovery. 

Visitors of the festival are invited to surrender to getting tied together and married. Please visit the ceremonial pavilion for an appointment or an instant treatment. Come in pairs, groups of lovers, alone, bring whatever of your stuff you want to get closer to and take that togetherness to the next level.

Ugo deHaes: Geënt (NL Premiere)

Geënt is an intensely, physical duet that explores the inner working of relationships. How we strengthen and support each other, and how we trust and rely on each other, but also how we lean on each other and sometimes drag each other down. Simultaneously, the intimate material shows the beautiful and the suffocating aspects of a relationship. In Geënt you will witness the tremendous effort put forth by the dancers to remain together as a couple.

Geënt is an intimate performace based on Grafted that Ugo made in 2013 for five dance couples.

As an Amsterdam based drummer Stephen Doyle has been lucky to play with some of the most interesting and great people he knows. He likes to makes things with his hands and isn't bad at autoCAD either. He's interested in space and time (but really who isn't). He's been known to hang out with this lot; the lock, dagora, FVVSSD, The John Ew Band. 

On the festival he will perform a hypnotizing drum installation at a very secret place...

Mor Shani: Ecclesiastes - an exercise in perspective (film premiere)

A film essay by Mor Shani in collaboration with Luis Alonso Rios Zertuche and Connor Schumacher that asks us to consider another perspective on things we all know. A re-reading of old knowledge and a second look at the most banal of actions. This is a first step in Mor Shani's current research of "small eternities" - an exploration of the dramaturgies of non conflict.

Julian Hetzel: Hellow Hollow

With Hellow Hollow, Julian Hetzel extends his performance I’m Not Here Says the Void into the public space. A group of ephemeral human like sculptures hang out in the area around the Tolhuistuin. The presence of these dark and anthropomorph creatures generates an interference in the public space – the sculptures are visual obstacles. Julian Hetzel uses black plastic foil to enter a disturbing dialogue on presence through absence and on the seductive power of the surface. What is visible is exactly what is in front of the very eyes of the spectator and in the same time it is everything else…

Hannah Polak: Underwater Love

Presented in collaboration with Subbacultcha!

Underwater Love is a video-perfomance by Subbacultcha!’s artist-in-residence Hannah Polak, in which she confronts the beauty standards that she grew up with and that have haunted her ever since. 

Lohan Pecan, the protagonist, is a character that Polak developed during her residency. The film addresses fundamental human topics like love, hate, anger, despair, jealousy, sex, fear, and courage. The dreamy Lohan is a living sculpture formed out of love and worship – a true product of her time. With archive footage, her own body and voice she creates a collage that reflects on her own past. It is a love letter to love itself and all the things that go along with it.

Cinedans

In collaboration with Cinedans, WhyNot presents a selection of short films that focus on movement, rhythm and dance. The films will screen at curious places in the garden of the Tolhuistuin.

Caterina Pecchioli: Social Choreography

For WhyNot, artist Caterina Pecchioli has specially adapted her work Social Choreography to the garden context of the Tolhuistuin. Social Choreography is an interactive installation with chairs, in which the audience becomes involved in an open-ended performative exchange. She invites the audience to play with simple positions in space and daily dynamics. The performance creates a space to experiment and reflect on how simple gestures can influence the emotional, social and power relations between each other.

"The viewer is asked to occupy several often diametrically opposed roles – parent, child, chairman, member of a professional group, and in the most generic sense – performer, spectator. This displaced re-enactment of habitual patterns of behaviours allows the visitor to become aware of slipping in and out of different social roles. At the same time actions like - explaining, listening, praying or waiting are deprived of their usual meaning, and can be re-enacted, objectified, experimented with." (Alena Alexandrova)
