In this year’s last Re-Create Out Loud, the audience itself is the subject of discussion. Or actually, not the people, but the objects that are dear to them. Us and Tom Loois reach beyond our anthropocentric mindset to explore our relationship with the world around us, the non-human existence, and the values (not value) represented by plants, animals, objects, the earth and the universe. How do we perceive things, but most importantly: how do things perceive us? What do they have to say to us and what can we learn from them?

Together with filmmaker and designer Alexandre Humbert, who made a whole range of object-interviews, and theatre maker Marije Sujica we will try, this evening, to leave every all-too-human projection behind us and really identify with the non-human, like sociologist Bruno Latour has been propagating for years. A first step towards a different world.

OurSpace - Front Row Festival

Front Row is the ongoing cultural experiment by We Are Public. On 28 September they present it all at once. Allow yourself to be dragged into a vortex of music, theatre, dance, film, art and everything in between.

WhyNot has been invited to show our performance OurSpace, a quirky social experiment that choreographs the bodies of participants using a chatbot in WhatsApp. The performance tests the boundaries of space in our hyperconnected world. It reflects on the relatively new but seemingly normalized behaviours and movements we show in our virtual social networks, like “following”, “zooming in” and “liking”.

The chatbot, your social companion in this performance, askes you questions and provides assignments that translate online social habits into physical movements, to help you build new contacts in OurSpace. A dance ritual for new encounters.

A Question of Ma

Amos Ben-Tal / Gosse de Kort / WhyNot

A performance-lecture about dance and architecture

The Japanese word Ma can be roughly translated as "gap", "interval", "pause" or "the space between two structural parts”.

How can the body affect the space it is in? How can a space influence the body? How can the two coexist in symbiosis?

To investigate these key questions, dance and performance platform WhyNot brings together two acclaimed artists from two different disciplines: choreographer Amos Ben-Tal (OFFprojects) and inter-disciplinary artist Gosse de Kort.

Together with dancer and long-time OFFprojects collaborator Genevieve Osborne, the two makers share with the public the intricate choreographic material and a mesmerizing kinetic installation that emerged from their interactions over the past few months. Interspersed playfully throughout this unique event are personal insights from the artists about their practices and methods but also the discrete languages and intuitions that fed their collaboration. Paralel to the research of Amos & Gosse, critical writer and researcher at Het Nieuwe Instituut Katia Truijen has made an elaborate publication about the links between art, dance and architecture: Moving through the middle

Ma is not something that is created by compositional elements; it takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements.

Re-Create Out Loud #6: What if… we would be talking to your body?

or the fourth consecutive year, MU sets the stage for Create Out Loud, the talk show that brings design alive during Dutch Design Week, seven evenings in a row. Each night, new guests take us on a refreshing trip through the world of design. Both interesting for a large audience and relevant for insiders and professional designers. Still, Create Out Loud wouldn’t do justice to its name if it lacked the courage to reinvent itself.

In order to do just that, we challenge the boundaries of the familiar talk show on three of these evenings, together with What If Lab. Several designers will give the concept a make-over, a differing format or a surprising pop-up arrangement. All meant to elevate your experience and perception and to get you involved in the conversation in a more intense and intimate way.

Together with designer/curator Tom Loois, we are reinventing the workshop format in a more physical way. A regular talk show predominantly appeals to the eyes and the ears. If it weren’t for logistical inconveniences, we might as well leave the rest of our body at home. But isn’t that a bit of a sad situation? Would the talk show experience not benefit immensely when it addresses the entire body instead of just two human senses? How could posture, arrangement or movement contribute to the way we process all the information, follow the discussion at the table or sympathise with the guests? For answers to these questions – and more – bring your body over to the talk show. Or better yet: step right in!
